Bottom Lip Swollen After Sunburn: What to Know

The lip has a delicate surface and can become inflamed after unprotected sun exposure. Redness, warmth, tenderness, tightness, and swelling may be followed by peeling or small blisters as the surface repairs itself. A blistered or peeling lip may instead reflect another cause, including a cold sore or contact reaction, so the timing and appearance matter. Repeated sun injury contributes to sun-damaged skin over time. Swelling with breathing symptoms is not explained by a routine sunburn and needs urgent help.

Move out of direct sun and apply a cool, damp cloth without rubbing. Keep the surface lightly moisturised with a bland emollient suitable for the lips, and drink fluids if you feel dry. Do not peel loose skin or pop blisters. Avoid fragranced products, exfoliants, spicy foods, and smoking while the area is tender. Use lip protection with broad sun protection once the surface tolerates it, and cover the lips with a hat or shade. A clinician should guide any corticosteroid use on or near the mouth.

Seek urgent help for swelling of the tongue or throat, breathing difficulty, faintness, confusion, or inability to swallow fluids. Arrange prompt medical care for extensive blistering, severe pain, fever, pus, rapidly spreading redness, marked dehydration, or swelling that keeps worsening. Have a persistent rough, bleeding, crusted, or non-healing lip patch examined, particularly when it follows repeated sun exposure. Do not assume every blister is sunburn.
