Bottom Lip Swollen for No Reason: What to Know

A trigger may be easy to miss: a new lip balm, toothpaste, food, medicine, dental product, or insect bite can irritate or inflame the lip. Biting the lip, sleeping against it, or a dental problem may cause one area to swell. Infection is more concerning when there is increasing pain, warmth, pus, crusting, or fever. Stop newly introduced cosmetic or oral-care products until the cause is clearer. Use a cool compress through a clean cloth and avoid rubbing, biting, or applying harsh home remedies. Do not take someone else’s prescription medicine. A pharmacist or clinician can help decide whether an antihistamine or another treatment is appropriate for you.

Get emergency help for swelling of the tongue or throat, a tight throat, breathing difficulty, wheezing, faintness, or trouble swallowing. Seek same-day advice when swelling is worsening, follows a new medicine, or occurs with hives. Arrange a medical or dental review for persistent swelling, severe pain, fever, pus, numbness, or a tooth problem. Even mild swelling should be reviewed if it repeatedly returns without a clear trigger.
