Botox for frown lines: what to know

Frown lines, also called glabellar lines, sit between the eyebrows and deepen when you squint, concentrate, or draw the brows inward. Botulinum toxin reduces the nerve signal to selected muscles, so those muscles contract less strongly. This can make expression lines look softer while preserving some natural movement. A line that remains when the face is relaxed may have a skin or volume component that injections alone do not fully change. Your clinician should examine your brow position, eyelid strength, facial asymmetry, and desired expression before recommending treatment.

Use a qualified medical injector and provide a complete health and medication history. Mention previous toxin treatments, neuromuscular disease, swallowing or breathing symptoms, allergies, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and any procedure planned near the eyes or forehead. Do not copy another person’s dose or injection pattern. After treatment, follow the clinic’s instructions and avoid pressing or massaging the sites. Temporary redness, tenderness, headache, or bruising can happen. A review can help distinguish normal settling from a problem.

Call the clinic if you notice pronounced eyelid drooping, marked brow asymmetry, double vision, spreading weakness, or symptoms that are worsening rather than settling. Get urgent help for trouble breathing, swallowing, or speaking. New facial weakness that does not fit the treated area should also be assessed promptly instead of being assumed to be a cosmetic effect.

Ask what is causing your frown lines, how much movement you should retain, how your brow and eyelids may respond, and whether another option such as dermal filler is appropriate. Ask about expected onset, review timing, aftercare, and the plan if asymmetry appears.
