Botox for frown lines around the mouth

Creases around the mouth may deepen with smiling, pursing the lips, or other repeated movements. Sun exposure, dryness, changing skin elasticity, and loss of support can make them visible even when the face is relaxed. Botox mainly changes muscle activity; it does not replace lost volume or repair every surface crease.

Small amounts of botulinum toxin may be placed in carefully selected muscles when movement is a major contributor. An imprecise plan can affect lip movement, speech, drinking, or facial balance, which is why this area should be treated by an experienced medical injector.

At consultation, describe which expression creates the lines and whether you notice weakness, numbness, dental issues, or changes in eating. Tell the clinician about medicines, allergies, pregnancy or breastfeeding, prior injections, and any neuromuscular condition.

After the injections, mild redness, swelling, tenderness, bruising, or headache may occur. Do not massage the sites unless instructed. Keep follow-up so the clinician can assess lip function and symmetry before considering any adjustment. If the crease is mainly present at rest, ask whether a skin-focused plan or dermal filler is more appropriate.

Report significant difficulty smiling, speaking, drinking, or closing the lips to the treating clinic. Get urgent help for trouble breathing or swallowing, rapidly spreading weakness, severe allergic symptoms, or sudden vision changes. New sores, a firm lump, or persistent bleeding around the mouth also deserves a medical examination rather than cosmetic treatment alone.

Ask whether muscle movement or volume loss is the main cause, which muscles would be treated, how lip function will be protected, and what temporary changes could occur. Ask about alternatives such as dermal fillers and how follow-up will be handled.
