What should you know about Botox and cheek fillers?

Cheek fillers add volume and contour beneath the skin, while Botox relaxes selected muscles; they are different treatments with different goals. Cheek filler may support the midface, soften a hollow appearance, or create more definition. Botox is not a cheek-volume filler. A clinician should determine whether your concern is reduced volume, skin laxity, facial movement, or a combination.

Many cheek-filler treatments use hyaluronic acid, a gel placed in carefully selected tissue planes. The clinician considers cheek structure, skin thickness, facial proportions, and the amount of projection that fits your features. Swelling and bruising can temporarily make the cheeks look fuller than the settled result. Filler can improve contour but cannot lift every type of laxity or replace surgical correction. The material and injection depth also influence how the area feels and looks.

Discuss allergies, previous filler, dental work, skin infection, pregnancy or breastfeeding, medical conditions, and medicines that affect bleeding. Ask what product is being used and whether it can be assessed or adjusted later. Follow the clinic’s aftercare instructions, avoid pressing or massaging the cheeks unless directed, and attend a review if advised. Mild tenderness, redness, swelling, or bruising may occur after injections.

Seek urgent assessment for unusual or severe pain, pale or dusky skin, new vision changes, or rapidly increasing swelling after filler. These symptoms can signal a serious complication and should not be watched at home. Breathing difficulty or a widespread allergic reaction also needs emergency care.

Ask what is causing the cheek change, which filler material and layer are planned, how facial movement and symmetry will be protected, what swelling to expect, and what symptoms require immediate contact.
