Botox and antihistamines: what to know

Botox is a prescription injection that changes nerve signals in the treated area for selected medical or cosmetic uses. Antihistamines reduce histamine effects and may ease runny nose, itchy eyes, itchy throat, or a blocked nose. They do not reverse unwanted weakness, drooping, swallowing difficulty, or other effects after an injection. The medicine, dose, health history, and treatment site matter.

Tell the injector and pharmacist about every medicine, supplement, allergy, and previous reaction. Take an antihistamine only as directed, and check whether it can cause drowsiness before driving. Do not use it to self-treat a suspected allergic reaction to an injection. Keep aftercare instructions and contact the treating service if new symptoms appear.

Call emergency services for trouble breathing, swelling of the tongue or throat, widespread hives with dizziness, collapse, or rapidly worsening weakness. Seek prompt advice for difficulty swallowing, speaking, seeing, walking, or holding up the head after Botox, especially if symptoms spread beyond the treated area.

Ask why Botox is being used, whether your antihistamine is suitable, which side effects need a call, and when it is safe to resume driving or other activities.
