What should you know about bortezomib targeted therapy?

It is mainly used for certain blood cancers and is often combined with other medicines. The exact combination and schedule depend on the diagnosis, previous treatment, general health, and how the cancer responds.

Proteasomes act like cellular recycling units. Blocking them disrupts protein control and other survival processes inside sensitive cancer cells. Although the medicine targets a particular process, it can also affect healthy cells and cause side effects.

Bortezomib may be injected under the skin or given into a vein. Treatment is organised in cycles with planned rest periods. Blood tests before doses help the team check blood-cell counts, liver function, and whether treatment remains suitable.

Possible effects include tiredness, nausea, diarrhoea or constipation, reduced blood-cell counts, and tingling, numbness, burning, or pain in the hands and feet. Reporting nerve symptoms early matters because the team may adjust the dose or schedule.

Give the oncology team a current list of medicines, supplements, allergies, and existing nerve problems. Tell them about fever, infection, unusual bruising, dizziness, bowel changes, or difficulty eating and drinking before a planned dose.

Take supportive medicines exactly as prescribed and follow the team's advice about infection prevention and hydration. Protect numb hands and feet from burns, sharp objects, and falls. Do not start or stop another medicine or supplement without checking for interactions.

Contact the oncology service urgently for a fever or other signs of infection, unexpected bleeding, severe or persistent vomiting or diarrhoea, inability to keep fluids down, a spreading rash, or rapidly worsening numbness or weakness.

Call emergency services for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, chest pain, collapse, sudden confusion, or new weakness affecting one side of the body. Use the treatment team's emergency contact instructions even outside routine clinic hours.

Ask which medicines will accompany bortezomib, how it will be given, which blood tests are planned, and whom to contact after hours. Also ask what nerve changes should trigger a call and whether any current medicines need adjusting.
