What should you know about a booster dose of tetanus?

Tetanus is caused by bacteria that can enter broken skin, especially through punctures, crush injuries, burns or wounds contaminated with soil. The bacteria can produce a toxin that causes painful muscle stiffness and spasms, often affecting the jaw and neck. Vaccination trains the immune system to recognise this toxin. A booster strengthens that protection when it has reduced over time or when a wound creates a concern.

The decision depends on the wound and your previous vaccination record. A clean, minor cut is assessed differently from a deep or dirty wound. If your records are incomplete, a clinician may recommend a catch-up plan or additional wound protection.

Clean the wound promptly with running water and remove visible dirt without digging into the tissue. Arrange medical advice for a deep, puncture, crushed or contaminated wound, particularly if you cannot recall your last tetanus vaccine. Take any vaccination record you have. The injection is usually given into the upper arm; soreness, redness or brief tiredness can occur afterwards.

A booster does not replace wound care, and antibiotics are not a substitute for vaccination. A clinician will check whether the wound needs closure, cleaning, or other treatment.

Seek urgent care for trouble breathing or swallowing, severe muscle stiffness or spasms, rapidly increasing swelling, uncontrolled bleeding, or a wound with exposed bone or a lost body part. Contact a clinician promptly if redness, warmth, swelling, pus, worsening pain or fever develops around the injury.

Ask which vaccine is appropriate, whether your wound changes the timing, whether your previous doses provide enough protection, and which symptoms should prompt a review.
