Understanding products that claim to boost hyaluronic acid

In orthopaedic care, hyaluronic acid may be injected into an osteoarthritic joint to improve lubrication and reduce symptoms for some patients. It does not replace lost cartilage or remove the underlying arthritis.

Hyaluronic acid is a substance found naturally in joint fluid and other tissues, where it helps retain water and contributes to lubrication. A clinician-administered injection places a prepared product inside a specific joint; an oral product passes through digestion, and a topical product mainly acts where it is applied. These routes are not interchangeable.

Words such as boost, support or enhance are broad marketing language. The useful questions are what the product contains, how it is given, which condition it is intended to treat, and whether its expected benefit matches your goal.

Take the exact label or product name to a pharmacist or clinician. Check the ingredient list, route, manufacturer, intended joint and any allergy information. Do not inject a cosmetic, oral or unverified product, and do not treat a promotional claim as a diagnosis.

For joint pain, first establish the cause and discuss options such as activity adjustment, strengthening, weight management where relevant, pain relief and injection therapy. If an injection is chosen, ask what to do with blood-thinning medicines, how the skin will be checked for infection, and what activity is appropriate afterward.

Mild soreness or swelling can occur around an injected joint. Contact the treating clinic if pain or swelling is marked, persists, or is worsening. A hot red joint, fever, chills, drainage or feeling acutely unwell needs urgent assessment because infection must be excluded.

Call emergency services for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, collapse, or rapidly spreading hives after any product. Stop using an oral or topical product and obtain medical advice if you develop a significant rash, vomiting or other unexpected symptoms.

Ask what diagnosis the product is meant to address, how benefit will be judged, which side effects require a call, and what alternatives are suitable. For an injection, confirm which joint and side will be treated and whether fluid needs to be removed first.
