Bone metastasis in prostate cancer

It is still prostate cancer because the cells came from the prostate. The diagnosis does not predict one fixed experience: the sites involved, symptoms, bone strength and response to treatment differ between people.

Prostate cancer in bone often alters the normal cycle in which bone is broken down and rebuilt. This can cause deep or persistent pain and may weaken bone despite a dense appearance on scans. Some people have no bone symptoms when spread is first found.

Assessment can include a symptom review, examination, blood tests and imaging. CT, MRI, bone scans or PET imaging answer different questions, such as where disease is located, whether a bone is at risk of breaking, and whether tissue near the spinal cord is affected.

Treatment usually combines control of prostate cancer with protection of mobility and comfort. Hormone-based treatment may reduce signals that prostate cancer uses to grow. Other systemic medicines or targeted radioisotope therapy may be considered according to previous treatment, scan findings and overall health.

Radiotherapy can treat a troublesome bone area. Bone-strengthening therapy may lower skeletal risk in suitable patients, while pain medicines, physiotherapy and practical mobility support address daily function. Dental assessment may be requested before certain bone medicines because jaw health affects safe planning.

Call emergency services or attend an emergency department for new limb weakness, difficulty walking, numbness around the groin or buttocks, or loss of bladder or bowel control. Spinal cord compression is time-sensitive even if pain has been present for a while.

A sudden painful snap, inability to stand on a leg, or severe pain after a minor movement can indicate a fracture. Report new ongoing back or bone pain promptly to the oncology team so the cause and bone stability can be checked.
