What should you know about bone marrow cancer symptoms?

The pattern varies with the exact cancer and the blood cells affected. None of these symptoms confirms cancer on its own, because common infections, nutritional deficiencies, medicines, and other conditions can cause similar problems.

Reduced red blood cells can lead to persistent tiredness, weakness, pallor, dizziness, or breathlessness with usual activity. Impaired white blood cells may be associated with recurrent infections, fever, or slow recovery from illness. Too few functioning platelets can present with easy bruising, frequent nosebleeds, bleeding gums, tiny red or purple skin spots, or bleeding that lasts longer than expected.

Depending on the disease, people may also notice bone or back pain, swollen lymph nodes, drenching night sweats, weight loss without trying, reduced appetite, or abdominal fullness. A confirmed marrow cancer can present with some of these features, but a person with one feature does not therefore probably have cancer.

Arrange an appointment if symptoms persist, recur, or interfere with normal activity. Note when they began, whether they are changing, and any recent infections, bleeding, weight change, or new medicines. A clinician may examine the skin, lymph nodes, and abdomen and request a full blood count.

An abnormal blood count is a reason for careful interpretation, not a diagnosis by itself. Repeat blood tests, examination of the blood cells, imaging, or a bone marrow sample may be considered according to the pattern. Seek urgent care for fever with shaking chills, severe breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, confusion, uncontrolled bleeding, vomit containing blood, black stools, or a quickly spreading purple rash. During chemotherapy or other immune-suppressing treatment, contact the cancer service promptly for fever or signs of infection even if other symptoms seem mild.

Ask which blood cells are abnormal, what non-cancer causes are being considered, whether medicines could contribute, and what follow-up tests are needed. Clarify which temperature or bleeding changes require a same-day call and which service to contact outside normal hours.
