What Is a Bone Infection Called?

The infection may begin after germs enter through the bloodstream, an open wound, an operation, or tissue close to the bone. The name does not identify the germ or explain how it arrived, so further assessment is needed.

Osteomyelitis can develop suddenly or persist over time. It may involve one area of bone, the marrow inside it, and surrounding soft tissue. Pain, warmth, swelling, redness, fever, drainage, or a wound that does not heal can occur, although the pattern differs between people.

Clinicians combine the history and examination with blood tests and imaging. A sample of blood, wound fluid, or bone may be collected to identify the organism and guide antibiotic selection.

Arrange a medical assessment if bone pain is accompanied by swelling, warmth, fever, drainage, or a persistent wound, particularly after an injury or procedure. Do not squeeze or probe an open area. Keep it covered with a clean dressing and follow any wound-care instructions already provided.

Treatment depends on the site, cause, and extent of infection. It commonly includes targeted antibiotics; drainage or removal of infected or dead tissue may also be needed. Take prescribed medicine exactly as directed and attend planned wound checks.

Seek prompt medical care for rapidly increasing pain, redness or swelling, pus from a wound, fever with chills, or feeling markedly unwell. New confusion, faintness, breathing difficulty, or rapidly spreading skin discoloration warrants emergency assessment.

People with reduced sensation, poor circulation, diabetes, or a weakened immune system should have a new foot wound, exposed bone, or worsening ulcer assessed promptly because signs can be subtle.

Ask which bone appears involved, what tests can identify the organism, whether a tissue sample is needed, and how treatment response will be monitored. If an operation is discussed, ask what tissue may be removed and how the remaining bone or wound will be managed.
