How to prepare for a bone density scan

Short answer

Bone density scan preparation is usually simple: follow local instructions, avoid metal near the scan area, and share relevant health information.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Preparation essentials

Most DEXA appointments do not require fasting or an injection. Instructions can vary by centre, so use the directions supplied with your booking if they differ from general guidance.

Information the imaging team needs

Tell the service if you may be pregnant, recently had a test involving contrast material, or have metalwork, previous surgery, or a fracture near the planned measurement site. Contrast remaining in the body or structural changes can affect image interpretation.

Mention pain, limited mobility, or difficulty lying flat before the appointment. Staff can plan safer transfers, allow supportive positioning, and decide whether a different bone site should be measured.

Your appointment checklist

Choose loose clothing without zips, buckles, underwires, or other metal around the hip and spine, or expect to change into a gown. Bring the referral, identification requested by the centre, a current medicine and supplement list, and earlier bone density reports when available.

Do not stop prescribed medicines unless the requesting clinician or imaging service specifically instructs you to do so. Ask the centre how to handle calcium supplements on the appointment day because local protocols may differ.

Arrive with enough time to discuss recent imaging and mobility assistance. During the examination, follow positioning instructions and tell the radiographer if remaining still causes pain.

When to contact the service or seek care

Contact the imaging centre before attending if pregnancy is possible, you recently received contrast material, or illness prevents you from lying safely on the table. A routine scan should not delay assessment of an acute injury. Seek urgent care after a fall if you cannot bear weight, notice deformity, or have severe back pain with new weakness, numbness, or bladder or bowel changes.

Questions before you arrive

Confirm which body sites will be scanned, whether you should alter any supplements, and whether previous images are needed. If you use a wheelchair or need help transferring, ask what assistance and equipment are available at the centre.

Questions people ask

Can I eat before a bone density scan?

Usually yes, because DEXA generally does not require fasting. Follow any different instructions provided by your imaging centre.

Should I take my regular medicines?

Continue prescribed medicines unless your clinician or the imaging service gives a specific instruction. Ask separately about calcium supplements because protocols can vary.

What if I recently had a contrast scan?

Tell the bone density service before your visit. Contrast material can interfere with measurement, and the team may adjust the appointment timing.
