What should you know about bone conduction audiometry?

During the test, a small vibrating device rests behind the ear or on the forehead. You respond when you hear tones at different pitches and loudness levels. Because the vibration bypasses the outer and middle ear, the result can be compared with ordinary air-conduction testing.

The comparison helps show whether sound is being blocked before it reaches the inner ear, or whether the inner ear or hearing nerve is involved. Earwax buildup can affect air-conduction results. Hearing changes with ringing or episodes of dizziness may need a broader assessment, including consideration of Meniere's Disease.

Usually you need no special preparation. Tell the audiologist about sudden hearing change, ear pain, discharge, recent loud-noise exposure, or previous ear surgery. Sit comfortably, listen carefully, and respond whenever you hear a tone, even if it is faint. Ask for a break if you become tired; consistency helps the clinician interpret your responses.

Seek urgent medical assessment for sudden hearing loss, especially in one ear, or hearing loss with severe vertigo, facial weakness, severe headache, or neurological symptoms. Arrange a hearing assessment for gradual change, persistent ringing, repeated balance episodes, or difficulty following speech. The test is one part of an evaluation and may be followed by ear examination or other testing.

Ask: Does my pattern suggest a blockage or inner-ear problem? Was the test result reliable? Do I need earwax treatment, repeat testing, or referral? Could medicines, noise exposure, or balance symptoms be contributing?
