Boils on the private area: what to know

A boil on the private area is a tender, infected lump that should not be squeezed or pierced at home. Warm compresses, gentle cleansing and loose clothing may support drainage, but the location can make spreading redness or severe pain harder to judge.

Boils begin when infection develops around a hair follicle and may fill with pus. They can occur on the outer, hair-bearing skin of the groin, pubic region or buttock; a lump deeper inside the vagina has other possible causes and needs an examination. Friction, shaving, sweating or an irritated follicle can contribute. A cluster of recurring lumps may point to a longer-term skin condition rather than one isolated boil.

Apply a clean warm, damp cloth for about ten minutes at a time, several times through the day. Keep the area clean and dry, wash your hands before and after touching it, and cover any drainage with fresh gauze. Do not share towels or razors, and pause shaving or waxing until the skin heals. A clinician may recommend antibiotics for a skin infection or drain a collection when it is large or not settling.

Arrange prompt assessment if redness is spreading, pain is rapidly worsening, the swelling is near the vaginal opening or anus, or you feel feverish, weak or unwell. Seek urgent help for severe illness, red streaks, confusion, or difficulty passing urine. Recurrent boils, several lesions, diabetes, immune suppression or pregnancy are good reasons to contact a clinician early.

Ask whether the lump is a boil or another type of skin lump, whether it needs drainage, and how to protect nearby skin. You can also ask what may be driving repeated episodes and whether a swab or preventative plan is appropriate.
