What should you know about boils on head scalp?

A boil can form when bacteria enter an irritated hair follicle or a small scratch. On the scalp, hair can hide the size of the swelling, while brushing, helmets, and scratching may make it more sore. It may be a single painful lump or occur with nearby skin inflammation. Cysts and other scalp lumps can resemble boils, so recurrent or unusual lesions merit examination.

Clean the area gently and avoid scratching, shaving over it, or applying harsh products. Use a warm compress if comfortable, then cover drainage with clean gauze where practical. Wash hands after contact and do not share combs, hats, pillowcases, or towels. Do not pop the boil; opening it at home can spread bacteria and damage surrounding skin.

Contact a clinician if the swelling enlarges, pain becomes intense, redness extends, drainage smells bad, or you develop fever or chills. Prompt review is sensible when several lesions appear, hair loss develops around the site, or the problem keeps returning. A clinician can assess whether antibiotics for skin infection or abscess drainage is appropriate.
