What should you know about boils on fingers?

A boil may start after bacteria enter a nick, bite, or irritated hair follicle. The area can become red, warm, swollen, and painful, with a pale or yellow centre. Because fingers contain small spaces and are needed for movement, swelling deserves attention. A lump near the nail may instead involve the nail fold, so appearance alone cannot confirm the cause.

Wash gently with soap and water, pat dry, and cover any drainage with a clean dressing. A warm compress may reduce discomfort. Keep the finger elevated when it throbs and remove rings before swelling increases. Do not squeeze or pierce the lesion. Avoid sharing towels and wash hands after changing the dressing.

Seek prompt care if redness moves along the finger or hand, movement becomes limited, pain is severe, pus is increasing, or you develop fever or chills. Get advice sooner for a bite wound, a deep puncture, diabetes, poor circulation, or reduced immunity. A clinician may recommend antibiotics for skin infection or drainage when a collection cannot clear safely on its own.
