What should you know about boils in groin?

A boil begins when bacteria infect a hair follicle or nearby skin. The area may become red, warm, swollen and increasingly sore; a soft centre can develop as pus collects. Friction, sweating, shaving or an ingrown hair can irritate groin skin, but a clinician may need to confirm that a lump is a boil rather than another type of skin lump. Boils are a condition, while a groin lump is a symptom and does not identify its cause by itself.

Apply a clean warm, moist cloth for short periods several times through the day. Keep the skin clean and dry, wear loose breathable underwear, and avoid shaving or rubbing the area. Do not squeeze, pierce or cut the boil, because this can spread infection. If it opens, cover it with clean gauze, wash your hands after contact and do not share towels or razors. A clinician may recommend antibiotics for skin infection or a minor drainage procedure when the collection needs treatment.

Arrange medical assessment if the lump is rapidly enlarging, very painful, repeatedly returning, or not settling with simple care. Seek prompt help if redness spreads, red streaks appear, fever or chills develop, walking becomes difficult, or the swelling is close to the genital area. Get advice sooner if you have diabetes, reduced immunity, pregnancy, or several boils. Urgent assessment is appropriate for severe illness or rapidly worsening skin changes.
