Boils and cysts: how they differ

A boil commonly develops quickly around a hair follicle, with warmth, redness, tenderness, and possible pus. A cyst is often a rounded sac under the skin that changes slowly and may remain comfortable until irritated. An inflamed cyst can become red and painful, making the two difficult to tell apart by appearance alone. A clinician considers how fast the lump appeared, whether it drains, whether a central opening is present, and whether nearby skin is becoming inflamed. Recurrent lumps in the same area may need a more specific diagnosis.

Keep the lump clean and avoid pressing, cutting, or trying to empty it with a needle. A warm, moist compress can ease discomfort from a small boil; stop if it irritates the skin. Cover draining material with a clean dressing and wash hands before and after touching the area. Cysts can refill if their sac remains, so repeated squeezing is unlikely to solve the problem and can increase inflammation. A clinician may recommend observation, antibiotics for a skin infection, or abscess drainage when pus is trapped.

Arrange prompt review for increasing redness, heat, swelling, pain, drainage with an unpleasant smell, or repeated lesions. Seek urgent help with fever, chills, red streaks, rapid spread, severe pain, or a lump near the eye. A painful lump that limits walking, sitting, or arm movement also deserves timely assessment.
