Boils all over the body: what to know

A boil starts around an infected hair follicle and may become a deeper pocket of pus. Lesions can occur on the neck, armpits, groin, buttocks, thighs, or other hair-bearing areas. New lumps may reflect transfer of bacteria between skin sites, friction, sweating, shaving, or a condition that makes infections recur. A clinician may examine the pattern, check whether any area is fluctuant, and decide whether a sample or additional assessment is useful. A skin lump is not automatically a boil, so diagnosis matters.

Use a clean, warm, moist cloth on a boil for short sessions, then wash your hands. Keep the area covered with a fresh dressing if it drains. Do not squeeze, pierce, or shave over lesions; these actions can push infection deeper or spread it. Do not share towels, razors, clothing, or bedding, and launder items that touch draining skin. Arrange a dermatology or primary-care review, especially when lesions are numerous, recurring, or close together. Treatment may include antibiotics for a skin infection or a drainage procedure when a collection has formed.

Seek prompt medical care if redness is rapidly expanding, pain is escalating, fever or chills develop, red streaks appear, or you feel unusually weak. Get urgent assessment for a boil near the eye, nose, or spine, or for swelling that affects movement. Do not wait for home care to work when you have several new lesions or a weakened immune system.
