Boils, abscesses, and carbuncles

A boil usually starts around one infected hair follicle and appears as a tender, inflamed lump. An abscess is a deeper pocket of pus that can develop in skin or other tissue. A carbuncle is a connected group of boils, often with several openings and more surrounding inflammation. These conditions can cause warmth, swelling, pain, and drainage, but a similar-looking lump may have another cause. Examination helps identify depth and extent.

Keep the area clean, cover drainage with fresh gauze, and wash hands after contact. A warm compress may ease a small boil, but never squeeze, lance, or cut a lump yourself. Do not share towels, razors, clothing, or bedding that touches the affected skin. A clinician may recommend abscess drainage when pus is enclosed and may use antibiotics for skin infection when the surrounding infection or personal health factors call for them. Follow the prescribed course exactly.

Arrange medical review for a large, deep, recurrent, or very painful lump, a carbuncle, or drainage that does not settle. Seek prompt care for fever, chills, rapidly spreading redness, red streaks, severe weakness, or a boil near the eye, nose, or genitals. People with diabetes, immune suppression, or medicines that affect healing should seek advice early. Urgent assessment is needed if swelling interferes with breathing, swallowing, vision, or movement.

Ask which type of infection is present, whether a sample or drainage is needed, and whether antibiotics are appropriate. Discuss wound care, preventing spread at home, warning signs, and what to do if boils return.
