Boil on the scalp

A boil forms when infection and inflammation develop around a hair follicle. On the scalp it may feel like a sore bump hidden under the hair, with warmth, tenderness, swelling, or crusting. An inflamed cyst and other skin lumps can resemble a boil. Scratching, close shaving, or friction from headwear may irritate the skin and make it harder to heal.

Keep the area clean and use a clean warm compress for a short period when it feels soothing. Avoid scratching, pressing, shaving over, or trying to open the lump. Wash hands after touching it and do not share combs, hats, towels, or pillowcases if there is drainage. If it opens, let it drain naturally, cover the spot if practical, and seek advice about cleansing. Do not put strong chemicals or leftover medicine on the scalp.

Have the lump examined if it becomes larger, increasingly painful, repeatedly returns, or fails to improve. Seek prompt care for fever, chills, spreading redness, swelling of the face or neck, severe headache, confusion, or feeling faint. A clinician may consider antibiotics for skin infection or abscess drainage after examining the lump. Mention diabetes, immune conditions, recent scalp procedures, and medicines that affect healing.

Ask whether the bump is a boil, cyst, or another skin lump; whether drainage is safe or needed; and how to protect nearby hair and skin. Ask what symptoms should trigger urgent review if the swelling changes.
