Boil in armpit with no head

Boils begin around an irritated or infected hair follicle and can feel firm, warm, swollen, and sore before any drainage appears. An armpit lump can also come from a blocked sweat gland or an inflamed cyst. Repeated painful lumps, tunnels, scarring, or drainage in the underarm area can fit hidradenitis suppurativa, which needs a different long-term approach. A visible head is not required for a clinician to assess the problem.

Apply a clean warm, moist compress for short periods to ease discomfort and encourage natural drainage. Keep the area clean and dry, wear loose clothing, and pause shaving or deodorant if they sting. Do not squeeze, pierce, or cut the lump, because this can push infection deeper or spread it. Cover any drainage with clean gauze and wash your hands afterward. Avoid sharing towels, razors, or clothing that touches the area.

Arrange medical assessment if the lump is enlarging, very painful, not settling, or keeps returning. Seek prompt care for fever, chills, rapidly spreading redness, red streaks, marked weakness, or difficulty moving the arm. An armpit lump that feels different from a surface boil, remains after the skin inflammation settles, or occurs with unexplained weight loss also deserves examination. A clinician may decide whether drainage, a swab, or prescription treatment is appropriate.

Ask whether the lump looks like a boil, cyst, swollen lymph node, or hidradenitis suppurativa; whether it needs drainage; and what to do if similar lumps recur. Mention fever, drainage, shaving, new products, diabetes, immune conditions, and medicines that affect healing.
