Short answer

For keratosis pilaris, gentle moisturising and controlled exfoliation are usually more useful than vigorous body scrubbing that damages the skin barrier.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What keratosis pilaris means

Keratosis pilaris is a common follicular condition that creates small, rough bumps, often on the upper arms, thighs, or cheeks. The plugs are made from keratin, a normal skin protein, and are not caused by poor hygiene. Some bumps become red or itchy. Ingrown hairs can resemble them, particularly after shaving, so a sudden painful or pus-filled change may point to another problem.

What you can do

Use lukewarm water, a mild cleanser, and a moisturiser every day, especially after bathing. If your skin tolerates it, a clinician may suggest an emollient therapy containing a smoothing ingredient. Topical retinoids or a chemical peel may be options for selected persistent cases, with careful attention to irritation and skin tone. Do not pick, scrape, or use a rough mitt. If shaving contributes to ingrown hairs, discuss technique or laser hair removal with a qualified clinician.

When to seek care

Arrange a review if bumps become painful, hot, crusted, draining, or rapidly different from your usual pattern. Seek advice when moisturising and gentle care are not enough, or before starting a retinoid, peel, or laser procedure. A dermatologist can confirm the diagnosis and set a tolerable treatment schedule.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether this is keratosis pilaris, which moisturising ingredient fits you, how to introduce a retinoid, and whether hair removal is aggravating the bumps.

Questions people ask

Does keratosis pilaris need a body scrub?

No. A scrub is optional and should be gentle; consistent moisturising and a suitable leave-on treatment may be better tolerated.

Can keratosis pilaris turn into ingrown hairs?

They are different problems, although shaving and blocked follicles can make their bumps look alike or occur together.
