What should you know about body ringworm treatment?

Ringworm is not a worm. It is a fungal infection of the outer skin, often producing an expanding, scaly or itchy ring-shaped rash. It can spread through close skin contact or shared towels, clothing, sports equipment, and pets. A rash that looks circular is not enough to confirm the diagnosis because eczema and other conditions can look similar.

A clinician or pharmacist may recommend a topical antifungal for a limited area. Use it exactly as directed and continue for the advised period, even if the edge looks calmer quickly. Keep the area clean and dry, wash hands after applying medicine, change clothing that touches the rash, and do not share towels. Avoid steroid cream on its own unless a clinician specifically advises it, because it can mask or worsen a fungal rash. Oral antifungal treatment may be considered when several areas are involved, the infection is difficult to clear, or topical treatment is unsuitable.

Arrange medical advice if the rash is spreading, painful, oozing, involving the scalp or nails, or not improving with correctly used treatment. Seek prompt care if you have a weakened immune system, diabetes, or a rapidly inflamed rash. A clinician can examine a scale sample when the appearance is uncertain and check whether a household member or pet may be a source.
