What should you know about body rash and fever?

A body rash with fever can reflect infection or inflammation, so its appearance and accompanying symptoms guide urgency. Note when it began, whether it itches or hurts, and whether it fades briefly when pressed.

Viral illnesses such as chickenpox or COVID-19 may cause fever and a spreading rash with tiredness or respiratory symptoms. A hot, tender, rapidly enlarging area may suggest cellulitis. Travel, animal contact, a new medicine, food, insect bite or exposure to someone with a rash can provide useful clues. The rash itself does not identify the cause without examining the whole pattern and your other symptoms.

Keep babies, pregnant people and people with reduced immunity away from possible contagious illness until you receive advice. Do not share towels, clothing or personal items.

Take a clear photograph in good light and record changes in size, colour and texture. Rest, drink fluids and keep fingernails short if itching is strong. Use gentle, fragrance-free skin care and avoid applying steroid or antibiotic creams unless advised. Do not scratch blisters or peel crusts. A clinician may need to see the rash rather than relying on a description.

Get emergency help for a rash that does not fade when pressed, breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or tongue, fainting, confusion, seizure, a stiff neck, severe headache, or rapidly worsening illness. Seek same-day assessment for a painful spreading rash, purple spots, repeated vomiting, severe weakness, or fever in a young infant. Prompt advice is also wise after a new medicine if a rash is spreading or involves the mouth, eyes or genitals.

Ask whether the rash may be contagious, whether you need tests or treatment, how to control itching safely, and which changes should bring you back urgently.
