Is body itching a pregnancy symptom?

Stretching skin may itch around the abdomen, breasts, and hips. Eczema can flare or appear for the first time, and heat, sweat, new cosmetics, or laundry products may irritate the skin. Atopic Dermatitis, Hives, Contact Dermatitis, and Asteatotic Eczema describe different visible patterns. A pregnancy-related liver condition can cause itch without a primary rash, often on the palms or soles, so the symptom pattern matters more than the symptom name alone.

Moisturise regularly with a fragrance-free product, keep baths and showers lukewarm, and wear loose fabrics. Avoid scratching with bare nails; a cool cloth can calm the urge. Record when the itching started, where it is strongest, whether the baby is moving as usual, and any new products or medicines. Check every treatment with your maternity clinician before using it.

Tell your maternity team about new widespread itch, itch without a rash, or symptoms that disturb sleep. Seek urgent advice for yellow eyes or skin, dark urine, pale stools, severe abdominal pain, facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or reduced fetal movement. These features require timely clinical guidance rather than relying on moisturiser alone.

Ask whether you need blood tests, whether your skin shows eczema or another rash, which products are pregnancy-appropriate, and what fetal-movement changes should trigger urgent contact.
