Body itching and swelling: what to know

Hives are itchy raised areas that can move or fade while new ones appear. Swelling around the lips, eyelids, tongue, hands, or feet may occur with a reaction and can sometimes affect deeper tissue. Heat, infection, medicines, food, insect exposure, or pressure are possible triggers. Dry or inflamed skin conditions such as Atopic Dermatitis or Contact Dermatitis can itch, but sudden swelling needs separate attention. Note whether the swelling is local or widespread and whether it is changing quickly.

Stop and move away from any suspected new exposure while arranging medical advice. Photograph the swelling, record when it began, and list recent foods, medicines, products, and insect exposures. Do not scratch or apply a new cream over rapidly changing skin. If you have an emergency medicine prescribed for a previous serious reaction, follow your personal action plan. A clinician can decide whether the pattern is Hives or another cause.

Call emergency services immediately for swelling of the tongue or throat, hoarse voice, trouble breathing or swallowing, faintness, confusion, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Seek prompt care for widespread swelling, repeated vomiting, or a new medicine-associated rash. Arrange review if episodes recur, last, or leave bruising or pain.
