What should you know about body itching after delivery?

The skin can feel dry or sensitive after pregnancy, washing, sweating, hospital adhesives, new detergents or frequent contact with breast milk. Atopic dermatitis or contact dermatitis may flare, while hives can appear as itchy raised areas. A skin yeast infection may affect warm, moist folds. Asteatotic eczema can cause fine scaling and itch when the skin barrier is dry; psoriasis or lichen planus are other possibilities when there are persistent plaques or distinctive marks.

Itching that began during pregnancy and continues after delivery, especially on the palms or soles or with nausea, dark urine or pale stools, deserves prompt medical advice because it may reflect a liver or bile-flow problem. The timing, distribution, rash and any medicines taken after birth help a clinician decide what to check.

Use short lukewarm showers, a fragrance-free cleanser and a simple moisturiser while the skin is still slightly damp. Wear loose clothing, keep skin folds dry and use a cool cloth for brief periods. Avoid scratching, new essential oils and unlabelled creams, particularly on the breast if feeding. Tell a clinician or pharmacist that you are breastfeeding or taking medicines before using an antihistamine, steroid or antifungal product. Keep a note of the itch, rash, new products and any symptoms affecting you or your baby.

Contact your maternity team or clinician promptly for severe or spreading itch, itching without a rash, itch on the palms or soles, yellow eyes or skin, dark urine, pale stools, abdominal pain or vomiting. Seek emergency help for trouble breathing, swelling of the tongue or throat, faintness, rapidly spreading blisters, skin peeling or a high fever. Painful, hot, swollen or draining skin may indicate infection and should be assessed soon.
