What should you know about body aches and sensitive skin?

Sensitive skin may sting, burn, itch, flush, or react to products that previously felt comfortable. Body aches can happen at the same time during a viral illness, fever, medication reaction, or inflammatory condition, but the two symptoms can also be unrelated.

Atopic dermatitis commonly presents with itch and a disrupted skin barrier; rosacea may bring facial flushing, burning, or tenderness; perioral dermatitis tends to cause a rash around the mouth, nose, or eyes. These conditions do not explain every episode of body pain, so timing, rash distribution, fever, and recent exposures help guide an assessment. Pause newly introduced cosmetics, fragranced products, harsh cleansers, and hot showers. Use lukewarm water, a bland moisturiser, loose clothing, and a cool compress if the skin feels hot or tender. Rest, drink fluids, and record when the aches and skin changes began, including medicines, illness contacts, foods, or product exposures.

Avoid applying steroid creams or taking leftover medicines without advice, particularly when the rash is on the face. A clinician may distinguish dermatitis from infection or a medicine reaction by examining the skin and asking about the whole-body symptoms.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, a rapidly spreading rash, purple or blistering skin, confusion, or severe weakness. Arrange prompt medical review for fever with a new rash, marked pain, pus, eye involvement, or symptoms that keep worsening. If aches persist without a clear explanation, book an assessment even when the skin changes seem mild.
