Blurry vision and heat stroke

Heat stroke occurs when the body cannot control its temperature and brain function becomes affected. Blurred vision may appear with confusion, unusual behaviour, weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea, or collapse. Heat Exhaustion can precede more severe illness, but the two cannot be separated safely by vision symptoms alone.

Fever, vomiting, heavy sweating or a change in sweating, and hot skin are relevant clues. Heat illness can worsen quickly after strenuous activity, time in a hot environment, or inadequate fluid replacement. Do not wait for every warning sign to appear.

Call emergency services now if heat stroke is possible. Move the person to shade or air conditioning, remove excess clothing, and cool the skin with cold wet cloths or cool water and airflow. Stay with them and watch their breathing. Do not give drinks to a confused, drowsy, vomiting, or unconscious person; place an unconscious breathing person on their side.

Emergency help is needed for blurred vision with confusion, collapse, seizure, severe weakness, fainting, repeated vomiting, trouble breathing, or a very high temperature after heat exposure. Do not drive the affected person yourself if they are confused or deteriorating. Hospital treatment may include monitoring and IV Fluid Therapy.

Ask what caused the heat illness, when it is safe to return to exercise or outdoor work, how to plan cooling and fluids, and whether kidney, muscle, or other checks are needed after severe symptoms.
