What should you know about bluetooth otoscope?

An otoscope may help show the outer ear canal, wax, redness, swelling, fluid, or changes around the eardrum. Bluetooth connectivity lets an image or video appear on a phone or tablet and may make it easier to share with a clinician.

The view can be limited by wax, narrow canals, movement, glare, or an incorrect angle. A picture cannot reliably establish the cause of ear pain, reduced hearing, discharge, or fever, and a normal image does not rule out every ear problem.

Use only the tip and attachments supplied for the device, clean them as directed, and never force the instrument into the canal. Do not use it if there may be a perforated eardrum, recent ear surgery, or significant injury unless a clinician has advised you.

For a child, keep the device still and stop if they are distressed. Record when symptoms began and whether there is fever, discharge, hearing change, or recent swimming. A child health consultation or GP consultation can put the image and symptoms together.

Seek urgent assessment for severe ear pain, swelling behind the ear, a foreign object, blood or pus after an injury, sudden hearing loss, severe dizziness, or a child who appears very unwell.

Arrange a clinical review for persistent pain, fever, discharge, worsening hearing, or symptoms that keep returning. Do not delay care while trying to obtain a clearer image.

Ask whether it is safe to examine the ear at home, what features in an image matter, how to clean the device, and whether your symptoms need an in-person examination or hearing test.
