What Should You Know About Blue-White Veil Dermoscopy?

Dermoscopy uses magnification and light to show details that may be difficult to see with the naked eye. A blue-white veil describes an area that looks hazy blue or blue-white and less transparent than nearby skin. It can reflect pigment or change deeper in the skin, but the pattern is not a diagnosis on its own. The clinician also considers asymmetry, colour variation, borders, growth and the spot’s history.

Arrange a focused skin examination if this feature was noticed on a changing mole or another pigmented spot. The clinician may compare both sides of the lesion, examine the rest of your skin and record an image for review. A dermatoscope can support this assessment. If the spot has concerning features, removal may allow laboratory examination; do not pick, scrape or attempt home removal.

Book an appointment promptly for a spot that is changing in size, shape or colour, bleeding without a clear injury, repeatedly crusting, itching persistently or standing out from your other moles. Seek urgent medical help for heavy bleeding, rapidly spreading redness, severe pain or fever after a procedure.

Ask what other dermoscopic signs were present, whether a comparison image is useful, how soon the spot should be reassessed and whether removal or observation is more appropriate. Clarify how to protect the area from sun and which changes should trigger an earlier review.
