Short answer

A blue pea-sized lump under the skin can have several causes, so its timing, tenderness, growth, and surface changes help determine how promptly it needs review.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Possible causes
Bruising, inflammation, blood-vessel changes, and other skin growths are possibilities.
Do not do
Do not squeeze, pierce, or repeatedly press the lump.
Review
Persistence, growth, firmness, or bleeding should prompt assessment.

What it may mean

Blue colour may reflect blood close to the surface, a bruise, a small blood-vessel change, or pigment deeper in the skin. A tender, warm lump with redness or drainage may fit an inflamed lesion or boil. A smooth, stable lump can have a different explanation. A blue lump is not enough to identify a particular condition, and most possible causes cannot be sorted safely by colour alone.

A clinician will ask when it appeared, whether it followed an injury, and whether it changes with pressure or position. They may feel the lump and inspect the skin around it. Further testing or removal may be suggested if it is persistent, enlarging, firm, fixed, or diagnostically unclear.

What to do next

Measure or photograph the area so you can notice change, and avoid squeezing, piercing, or repeatedly pressing it. If it followed an injury, protect the area and observe whether the colour fades. Arrange a routine examination if the lump remains, returns, becomes painful, or changes in size or texture. Bring a list of medicines, including medicines that affect bleeding, to the appointment.

Treatment depends on the cause. An infection may need medical treatment; some inflamed skin lesions are treated with a clinician-directed injection or another procedure. Do not apply steroid creams or use leftover antibiotics without advice.

When to seek care

Seek prompt care if the lump grows quickly, becomes very painful, feels hot, produces pus, or is accompanied by fever. Get urgent help if swelling spreads rapidly, the skin turns severely dark, bleeding does not stop, or you feel faint. A lump that is hard, fixed, repeatedly bleeding, or not healing also deserves timely assessment, even without pain.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what the colour and depth suggest, whether the lump is inflamed or vascular, whether imaging or sampling is needed, which changes should trigger review, and whether any treatment could alter its appearance before diagnosis.

Questions people ask

Does a blue lump always mean cancer?

No. Colour does not diagnose cancer. A persistent or changing lump still needs examination to identify its cause.

Can I treat the lump at home?

Avoid popping or puncturing it. Simple observation may be reasonable after a clear minor injury, but ongoing or changing lumps should be assessed.
