What should you know about blue naevus dermoscopy?

Short answer
Dermoscopy can help a dermatologist assess a blue naevus more closely, but it cannot by itself prove that a lesion is harmless or cancerous.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Tool
- A dermatoscope magnifies and illuminates the lesion
- Limitation
- Visual assessment cannot replace pathology when diagnosis is uncertain
What dermoscopy shows
A blue naevus is a usually blue-grey pigmented lesion created by pigment deeper in the skin. A dermatoscope provides magnification and controlled illumination, helping the clinician see colour distribution, symmetry, borders, and internal structures. The view can support a decision to monitor, photograph, compare over time, or remove the lesion for laboratory examination.
A stable, uniform pattern may be reassuring, but no single visual feature settles every case. A lesion that changes, has several colours, develops an irregular outline, or does not fit the expected pattern may need tissue diagnosis.
What to do at the appointment
Tell the dermatologist when you first noticed the mark, whether it has changed, and whether there is a history of skin cancer or similar lesions. Bring earlier photographs and mention bleeding, crusting, pain, or itching. Avoid picking at the area before assessment. If removal is advised, ask how the wound will be closed, how the specimen will be examined, and when results will be available.
When to seek care
Arrange timely review for a blue naevus that enlarges, changes colour or shape, bleeds, crusts, becomes persistently painful, or is joined by a new nearby lump. Seek earlier advice if a mark changes after injury or if you cannot tell whether it is new.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what pattern was seen through the dermatoscope, whether serial photographs are suitable, and what change should prompt reassessment. Ask whether mole removal is recommended and whether the full lesion can be sent for pathology.

Questions people ask
Can dermoscopy diagnose a blue naevus with certainty?
It can provide useful visual information, but uncertain or changing lesions may need tissue examination.
Does every blue naevus need removal?
No. Some can be monitored, while changing, atypical, or uncertain lesions may be removed for diagnosis.
