What should you know about blue lump under skin?

Blue or purple colour may come from blood close to the surface, a bruise, a dilated vein, or pigment within a lesion. Tender, warm, rapidly enlarging lumps can occur with infection such as a boil. A firm, pearly, scabbing, or repeatedly bleeding spot needs examination because skin cancers can sometimes look unlike a typical brown mark.

Colour alone cannot identify the cause. The clinician may inspect and feel the lump, ask when it appeared, and consider imaging or a small sample if the appearance or depth is unclear.

Do not squeeze, pierce, massage, or inject the lump. Photograph it beside a ruler or familiar object, note changes in colour and size, and record pain, discharge, injury, or new medicines. Arrange a routine appointment if it persists or has no clear explanation. Treatment depends on the diagnosis; an intralesional steroid injection is useful only for selected inflammatory lesions and is not a general remedy.

Seek prompt care for rapid growth, severe pain, spreading redness, warmth, pus, fever, numbness, or bleeding that does not stop with pressure. A lump that is hard, fixed, recurrent, or changing also deserves timely dermatology review.

Ask what tissue appears to create the colour, whether the lump is in the skin or deeper, and whether examination, ultrasound, or biopsy is needed. Ask which changes should trigger earlier review.
