Blotchy sunburn on legs: what to know

Short answer
Blotchy sunburn on the legs reflects uneven ultraviolet injury; cool, protect, and moisturise the skin while watching for severe symptoms.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- First response
- Cool the skin and leave direct sun
- Avoid
- Ice, scrubbing, and opening blisters
- Red flag
- Severe symptoms or extensive blistering
Why the burn looks uneven
Sun exposure may be blocked by clothing, hair, sunscreen, or movement, leaving some areas redder than others. Sunburn can cause warmth, soreness, tightness, and later peeling. Blisters indicate deeper injury and should not be intentionally opened. Colour can remain uneven after the acute redness settles, especially where the skin became inflamed. The pattern alone cannot show how deep the injury is, so symptoms and skin surface matter.
Support recovery
Get out of direct sun and cool the legs with a lukewarm shower or a cool damp cloth. Apply a plain moisturiser or Emollient Therapy while the skin is intact, drink fluids, and wear loose clothing. Do not scrub, peel, pop blisters, or apply ice directly. Keep the area covered from further sun until healed. A clinician may advise Topical Corticosteroids in selected cases; do not use them on broken skin without instructions.
When to seek care
Seek urgent medical advice for extensive blistering, severe pain, marked swelling, fever, vomiting, dizziness, confusion, or fainting. Arrange review if redness spreads, drainage or pus appears, pain is worsening, or the burn affects a large area. Get advice for a child, an older adult, or someone with a condition or medicine that increases sun sensitivity.
Questions for your doctor

Questions people ask
Why are some parts of my legs redder?
Exposure can vary with clothing, shade, sunscreen coverage, and movement, producing an uneven burn.
Can I peel the loose skin?
No. Let it shed naturally and moisturise gently; pulling it can expose fragile skin and invite infection.
