What should you know about bloody nose after sneezing?

Sneezing briefly increases pressure and can disturb a dry or inflamed nasal lining. Allergic rhinitis, a common cold, house dust mite allergy, or pet allergy may cause congestion, itching, rubbing, and fragile tissue. Nose sprays, picking, dry indoor air, and medicines that affect clotting can also make bleeding easier. A single light episode is different from frequent unexplained bleeding.

Sit upright and lean slightly forward so blood does not run down your throat. Pinch the soft part of your nose firmly and continuously while breathing through your mouth. Spit out blood rather than swallowing it. After it stops, avoid nose blowing, picking, strenuous activity, and hot drinks for a while. Saline spray or a clinician-recommended moisturising product may help dryness; use allergy medication only as directed.

Seek emergency help if bleeding is heavy, you feel faint, breathing is affected, or it follows a significant head or facial injury. Arrange prompt medical review if it keeps returning, does not settle with firm pressure, affects both sides repeatedly, or occurs while taking a blood-thinning medicine. Children with recurrent episodes should also be assessed.
