What should you know about bloody mucus and sore throat?

Dry air, repeated throat clearing, postnasal drainage, or a small irritated vessel can leave pink or red streaks in mucus. A common cold, influenza, COVID-19, allergic rhinitis, tonsillitis, or strep throat can inflame the lining; acid reflux can irritate the throat without a respiratory infection. The colour and amount of blood do not identify the cause by themselves.

Sip fluids, choose warm or cool drinks that feel soothing, and avoid smoking, vaping, alcohol, and forceful throat clearing. Saline nasal rinsing may help postnasal drainage when used with safe water and clean equipment. Rest and monitor whether the blood-streaking is fading. Arrange a clinical review if it persists, returns, or occurs with fever or worsening throat pain.

Seek emergency help for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, a muffled voice, rapidly increasing neck or throat swelling, or coughing or vomiting more than a trace of blood. Urgent review is also needed for severe dehydration, marked weakness, or a high fever with a rapidly worsening illness.
