Bloody diarrhea and food poisoning: what to know

Food poisoning can inflame the intestine and cause loose stools, cramps, nausea, vomiting or fever. Blood may appear when the bowel lining is irritated or an infection causes inflammation. Food Poisoning presents with bloody diarrhea in some cases, but the symptom does not identify the exact germ or cause by itself. Note when the illness began, what you ate, whether anyone else became unwell, and the colour and amount of blood.

Arrange prompt clinical advice rather than treating bloody stools as an ordinary stomach upset. Sip oral rehydration solution frequently if you can keep fluids down; it replaces water and salts lost through diarrhea or vomiting. Avoid alcohol and do not take anti-diarrhea medicine unless a clinician advises it, because slowing the bowel may be unsafe with some infections. Wash hands carefully and avoid preparing food for others while ill.

Seek urgent care for repeated or increasing bleeding, black stools, faintness, confusion, very little urine, inability to keep fluids down, severe abdominal pain, or a high fever. Children, older adults, pregnant people and anyone with a weakened immune system can become dehydrated quickly and should obtain advice early. IV Fluid Therapy may be needed when drinking is not enough.

Ask whether you need a stool test, which fluids are suitable, and which medicines to avoid. Tell the clinician about recent travel, untreated water, antibiotics, sick contacts and any medical conditions.
