What should you know about bloodshot eyes pregnancy?

Hormonal changes during pregnancy can affect the tear film and make eyes feel dry, gritty or more sensitive. Tiredness, indoor air, screen use, smoke and rubbing can intensify redness. Itching and watering may occur with allergic conjunctivitis. Crusts or sticky fluid may occur with conjunctivitis. Pregnancy itself does not explain every red eye, so the accompanying symptoms and timing matter.

Use a cool compress over closed eyelids and take breaks from screens. Keep hands and contact lenses away from irritated eyes; switch to glasses if lenses feel uncomfortable. A pharmacist, midwife or doctor can help you choose an eye lubricant appropriate for pregnancy and review any drops you already use. Avoid medicated drops borrowed from another person, and do not stop prescribed treatment without advice.

Contact a clinician promptly for eye pain, light sensitivity, reduced or blurred vision, injury, chemical exposure, pronounced swelling, or redness in an eye that contains a contact lens. Urgent assessment is appropriate when symptoms are severe or worsening quickly. Mention pregnancy and all medicines when seeking advice. Recurrent mild redness also deserves review if simple comfort measures do not help.
