Bloodshot eyes from crying: what to know

Tears spread across the eye and can leave the surface temporarily irritated, while rubbing or wiping can disturb the delicate vessels on the eyelids and the white of the eye. Puffy eyelids may make the redness look stronger. This pattern is generally short-lived and should gradually improve after the crying stops.

If the redness began before crying, remains prominent after rest, or affects one eye with discomfort, crying may have drawn attention to a separate problem. Conjunctivitis and allergic conjunctivitis can also cause red, watery eyes.

Use a cool, clean compress over closed eyelids and pat tears away gently rather than rubbing. Drink fluids, remove contact lenses, and pause eye makeup until the eyes feel normal. Lubricating drops may help surface dryness; choose them with advice from a pharmacist or clinician if you have other eye symptoms.

Arrange an eye assessment if redness does not improve, keeps returning without crying, or comes with pain, marked light sensitivity, discharge, a foreign-body sensation, or blurred vision. Seek urgent help for an injury, chemical exposure, sudden vision change, or severe eye pain.

Ask whether the surface of the eye is irritated, whether drops are needed, and how long you should avoid lenses or cosmetics. Explain when the redness started, whether you rubbed the eyes, and whether the symptoms are equal on both sides.
