Bloodshot eyes after wearing contacts: what to know

A lens can reduce the tear film reaching the eye, especially when worn for a long time or in air conditioning. A lens that is dirty, damaged, poorly fitted or left in while sleeping can scrape or inflame the surface. Redness can also occur with allergic conjunctivitis or conjunctivitis; the redness alone cannot identify the cause.

Remove the lenses and notice whether one or both eyes are affected. Burning and gritty discomfort fit surface irritation, while marked pain, worsening redness or blurred vision is more concerning for a corneal problem.

Take the lenses out and use glasses. Do not rub the eyes, reuse a disposable lens, or put a lens back in while the eye remains red. Preservative-free lubricating drops may soothe dryness if a pharmacist or clinician says they are suitable. Wash hands before touching the eyes, and do not share towels or eye products.

Arrange same-day eye care for significant pain, light sensitivity, reduced or blurred vision, a feeling that something is stuck, or redness that persists after lens removal. Seek urgent help if symptoms are severe or rapidly worsening, or if there is thick discharge. Contact-lens wearers should not wait several days with a painful red eye.

Ask whether the cornea is irritated, whether the lens fit and cleaning routine should change, and when it is safe to resume wearing contacts. Mention the lens type, wearing time, storage solution, and whether you slept or showered in the lenses.
