What Blood in Vomit Can Mean

Contact emergency services or go to an emergency department. Bright-red blood, clots, brown blood, and vomit that resembles coffee grounds can all represent bleeding.

Haematemesis is the medical name for blood vomited from the upper digestive tract. Potential sources include an ulcer, an inflamed stomach lining, a tear after forceful vomiting, or fragile enlarged veins associated with liver disease. Occasionally, blood swallowed from the nose or mouth is later vomited.

Dark granules can form when blood remains in the stomach and meets acid; this appearance is not reassuring. Oesophageal cancer and stomach cancer may present with vomiting blood, although many other conditions can also cause it. A diagnosis depends on clinical assessment rather than colour alone.

Have another person accompany you. Stay upright if comfortable, or roll onto your side if you become drowsy or feel likely to vomit again. Do not eat or drink while awaiting instructions, and do not drive when weak, dizzy, or unwell.

Take your medicines or a current list to the hospital. Tell staff about aspirin, blood thinners, anti-inflammatory painkillers, alcohol use, liver disease, previous ulcers, recent repeated vomiting, black stools, and pain. A photograph can help describe the episode if taking it did not delay care.

Call emergency services immediately for continuing or repeated blood, a large amount, black tar-like stool, fainting, severe dizziness, weakness, pale clammy skin, rapid or difficult breathing, confusion, or intense chest or abdominal pain. These signs may reflect substantial bleeding and require rapid stabilisation.

Ask what the examination and blood tests show, whether endoscopy will be used to find and treat the source, and whether any regular medicine needs adjustment. Request clear instructions about eating, drinking, medicine use, follow-up, and the signs of rebleeding before you leave.
