Blood sugar test in the second trimester

Screening may involve a blood sample after fasting and another sample after you drink a measured glucose solution. The timing and preparation depend on the service offering the test. The result is interpreted alongside your pregnancy stage, medical history and local clinical guidance.

A result outside the expected range does not tell you how you feel today and does not measure your baby's health directly. It may lead to repeat testing, home glucose monitoring or a discussion about food, movement and treatment. Prediabetes and type 2 diabetes are related terms but are not interchangeable with diabetes first recognised during pregnancy.

Read the appointment instructions carefully. Ask whether you need to fast, whether medicines should be taken, and what you may drink before or during the test. Plan to remain at the testing site if several samples are required, and bring a snack for afterwards if the clinic advises it.

Tell the team if you have been vomiting, feel unwell, or cannot complete the drink. Do not try to alter your usual diet to influence the result. If follow-up monitoring is recommended, a continuous glucose monitor may be discussed, although it does not replace the testing plan unless your clinician says it can.

Contact your maternity service promptly for fainting, persistent vomiting, severe weakness, confusion, or symptoms of very high or low glucose. Seek urgent help for a seizure, loss of consciousness, severe breathing difficulty or inability to keep fluids down. A routine screening appointment should not be used to delay care for acute symptoms.
