What should you know about blood sugar dizziness?

Low glucose may affect the brain’s fuel supply and trigger sweating, trembling, hunger, weakness, or difficulty concentrating. Dizziness can also follow dehydration, heat exposure, anxiety, anaemia, or an inner-ear problem. A dizzy spell alone cannot identify its cause.

Note whether the feeling is lightheadedness, imbalance, or a spinning sensation. Symptoms that improve after a prescribed response to low glucose are useful information, but do not prove the diagnosis.

Sit or lie down immediately, avoid driving, and ask someone to stay with you if you feel unsafe. If you have diabetes, check glucose when possible and follow your personal plan for suspected hypoglycaemia. Do not give food or drink to someone who is drowsy or unable to swallow.

Arrange a review if episodes recur, occur after a medicine change, or happen without a clear trigger. A clinician may check blood pressure, glucose, blood count, hydration, heart rhythm, and balance symptoms.

Call emergency services for fainting, chest pain, severe breathlessness, new weakness on one side, trouble speaking, seizure, severe confusion, or a sudden severe headache. Seek prompt care for ongoing vomiting, inability to drink, or dizziness after significant heat exposure.
