The small clip uses light to estimate how much oxygen is carried in the blood and displays a pulse rate. A blood pressure monitor instead measures the force of blood against artery walls. The two readings describe different parts of your health. Results can be affected by cold fingers, movement, nail products, poor circulation or an awkward fit, so a number should be interpreted alongside symptoms and the device's limitations.

Sit quietly, warm your hand, keep still and place the clip as directed. Wait for the display to settle, then record the reading with the time and your symptoms. Repeat an unexpected result after checking the fit, but do not delay care if you are struggling to breathe. Share persistent concerns with a GP, who can examine you and decide whether further assessment is needed.

Call emergency services for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, chest pain, fainting, new confusion or inability to speak in full sentences. A concerning device reading with worsening symptoms needs prompt clinical attention, and a reassuring reading does not overrule serious symptoms.
