Blood-Coloured or Bleeding Moles on the Body

A raised mole can bleed after shaving, rubbing against clothing, or scratching. Inflammation and other skin growths can look similar to a mole. Bleeding without a clear injury, repeated crusting, or visible change deserves clinical examination because appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

Pay attention to a mark that becomes asymmetric, develops an irregular edge, shows several colours, grows, or looks noticeably different from your other moles. Also note persistent itching, tenderness, a new raised area, surface breakdown, oozing, or bleeding. No single feature confirms a diagnosis, and ordinary moles can become irritated.

Moles are collections of pigment-producing cells. Some are present early in life and others appear later. Hormonal shifts and sun exposure can affect their appearance, but a new change should not automatically be attributed to either. A clinician may use magnification and comparison photographs and may recommend removal when tissue analysis is needed.

For fresh bleeding, press clean gauze firmly against the area without repeatedly lifting it to check. Once bleeding stops, gently clean and cover the site so clothing does not catch it. Do not use acids, blades, tying methods, or cosmetic removal products on a pigmented mark.

Arrange an appointment if bleeding had no obvious cause, returns, or accompanies change. Record when the change began and take a well-lit photograph for comparison. At the visit, mention previous skin cancers, substantial sun exposure, family history, immune-suppressing medicines, and whether the mole is repeatedly traumatised by clothing or shaving.

Request prompt assessment for spontaneous bleeding, repeated scabbing, an open sore that does not settle, rapid growth, darkening, loss of a regular outline, or a mark that differs clearly from nearby moles. Seek urgent help if firm continuous pressure does not control bleeding or if blood loss is accompanied by dizziness, faintness, or marked weakness.

Ask whether the mark appears traumatised or needs tissue analysis, which removal method preserves an accurate diagnosis, and whether the entire lesion should be excised. Clarify wound care, expected scarring, how results will be communicated, and whether the rest of your skin should be examined.
