Blood in vomit with a sore throat

Repeated vomiting can scrape or inflame the throat and upper food pipe, leaving small bright-red streaks. A dry cough, post-nasal mucus or an inflamed tonsil can also make the throat bleed, and that blood may be swallowed before vomiting. Acid reflux can irritate the throat and trigger nausea. Respiratory infections such as a common cold, influenza, COVID-19 or tonsillitis can cause sore throat, but they do not make vomiting blood a routine symptom.

The colour and amount matter: dark coffee-ground material suggests digested blood, while fresh streaks may be from recent surface irritation. A clinician should consider both the throat and the digestive tract.

Avoid forceful throat clearing and take small sips of cool fluid if swallowing is comfortable. Rest your voice and record whether the blood appears after coughing, retching or vomiting. Arrange same-day medical advice, especially if the bleeding returns. Do not take leftover antibiotics; treatment depends on the cause, and many sore throats are viral.

Seek emergency help for more than a few streaks, repeated blood, coffee-ground vomit, trouble breathing or swallowing, drooling, severe weakness, faintness, chest pain or severe abdominal pain. A rapidly worsening sore throat with a muffled voice or swelling can also need urgent review.

Ask whether the blood appears to come from the throat or stomach, whether reflux or infection fits your symptoms, and which pain medicines are suitable. Ask what amount of bleeding should trigger emergency care.
