Blood in vomit during a period

The timing may be coincidental. Do not attribute red or coffee-ground-like vomit to menstruation, even if nausea or vomiting commonly accompanies your periods.

Menstrual blood leaves through the vagina and does not normally enter the stomach. Vomited blood generally comes from the oesophagus, stomach, or nearby intestine. Irritation, an ulcer, a tear after repeated retching, or another source of upper digestive bleeding may be responsible.

Heavy menstrual bleeding and digestive bleeding occurring together may increase weakness or light-headedness. Medicines taken for period pain also matter: aspirin and anti-inflammatory pain medicines can irritate the stomach or increase bleeding in some people. Oesophageal cancer and stomach cancer can present with vomiting blood, but this sign does not show which underlying condition is responsible.

Seek urgent care and tell the clinician about both sources of bleeding. Describe the vomit's colour and amount, the heaviness of your period, abdominal or pelvic pain, black stools, repeated retching, pregnancy possibility, and any history of anaemia or digestive problems.

Bring details of pain medicines, blood thinners, supplements, and hormonal treatments. Do not take extra aspirin or anti-inflammatory tablets while waiting for advice. If you feel faint or unsteady, avoid driving and have someone remain with you.

Contact emergency services for continuing or heavy vomiting of blood, fainting, confusion, marked weakness, shortness of breath, racing heartbeat, cold clammy skin, severe abdominal pain, or black sticky bowel motions.

Urgent assessment is appropriate even if the vomit contained a small amount and has stopped. Simultaneous menstrual loss does not make blood in vomit less concerning.

Ask whether the digestive and menstrual bleeding require separate tests, whether your blood count needs checking, and which period-pain options are suitable. Clarify when to restart medicines and what follow-up is needed for each bleeding source.
